Jaipur Trip from Delhi: A 2-Day Plan for Forts, Palaces & Bazaars
A Jaipur trip from Delhi works best over 2 days. Jaipur is approximately 282 km from Delhi by road, a drive of a little over 5 hours. This plan covers the walled city on Day 1 and the hill forts on Day 2, in an order that keeps travel time low. It suits first-time visitors and weekenders alike.
Below, you will find the route, rough timings for each stop, and short notes on what to see. There are also tips for a day trip, help choosing between driving and a tour, and where to stay.
Getting to Jaipur from Delhi
Jaipur is well connected to Delhi by road, rail, and air.
- By road: The drive takes a little over 5Â hours, so leave by 6 AM to reach the old city by late morning
- By rail or air: Trains arrive at Jaipur Junction, and flights land at Jaipur International Airport

- Best time to visit: October to March, when the days are cooler

Day 1 Late Morning: City Palace and Jantar Mantar
Leave Delhi by around 6 AM to reach the old city by late morning. Begin at City Palace, where part of the palace is still home to the former royal family. Mubarak Mahal, the palace of reception, now houses a museum of royal textiles. Then cross over to Jantar Mantar, just beside the palace. Built by Sawai Jai Singh II, this UNESCO World Heritage Site uses giant stone instruments to measure time and track the planets.

Day 1 Afternoon: Hawa Mahal and Johari Bazaar
After lunch, head to Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Winds, built in 1799. Its five-storey pink sandstone façade is lined with small latticed windows, which let royal women watch street life without being seen. The entrance is at the back, so allow time to walk round. Spend the late afternoon at Johari Bazaar, one of Jaipur’s best-known markets for jewellery and textiles. Most markets close on Sundays, so on a weekend trip, keep Day 1 for Saturday.
Day 2 Morning: Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort
Reach Amer Fort early, as it opens at around 8 AM and gets busy by mid-morning. Raja Man Singh I began building it in 1592, and it is part of the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Enter through Jaleb Chowk, the main courtyard, and save time for the Sheesh Mahal, or mirror palace. Then continue up the ridge to Jaigarh Fort, built in 1726 to protect Amer. It is home to Jaivana, said to be the world’s largest cannon on wheels, and a partly restored tunnel links it to Amer.
Day 2 Afternoon: Nahargarh Fort and Jal Mahal
After lunch, drive along the ridge to Nahargarh Fort. Sawai Jai Singh II built it in 1734 as a royal retreat that also strengthened Amer’s defences. Its palace rooms and terraces look out across the whole city. There is no public transport to the fort, so travel by car or with a hired driver. On the way back down, stop at Jal Mahal on Man Sagar Lake, best seen from the lakeside, as its interior is closed to visitors.
Can a Jaipur Day Trip from Delhi Work?
A Jaipur day trip from Delhi is possible, but it means more than 10Â hours of driving in a single day. Leave Delhi before dawn and keep the list short. Start at Amer Fort, then head into the city for Hawa Mahal and City Palace. Jaigarh, Nahargarh, and the bazaars will have to wait for another visit. If you can spare a night, the 2-day plan above is far more relaxed.

Driving Yourself or Booking a Jaipur Tour from Delhi
Driving yourself gives you full control over the pace, the stops, and your start time each morning. A Jaipur tour from Delhi, with a hired driver or an organised group, trades some flexibility for an easier journey. A driver is especially useful on Day 2, as Nahargarh has no public transport. Either way, keep a car for the whole stay, since the forts sit well outside the walled city.
